READER LETTER: Worksop Town Football Club - Last call for photos for book on Tigers

With the help of Mr Jarvis, Mr Smith, the management team of the club, Tigers supporters and the Worksop Library, I have now finished the first draft of my book on the history of Worksop Town Football Club. The club '˜biography' from 1861-1930, is a fascinating journey, from the extensive playing fields of the old Pestalozzian School on Potter Street, via two grounds on Netherton Road, the Bridge Meadow/Newcastle Avenue ground and Central Avenue. It covers the great '˜giant-killing' exploits of the first Tigers, who regularly beat league teams, in Worksop, in front of crowds approaching 7,000, and once held Spurs to a draw at White Hart Lane.

I hope the book, and the extensive archive of old photographs that I have acquired, will interest anyone who is enthused by the history of the town. Almost every old Worksop family, and many Retford and families from surrounding villages are referenced at some point. And the book touches on mining history, general social history and the impact of three great wars as well as football, which stretches to local league, junior football and the stories of local players who played first-class and international football.

I have used the term ‘finished’ tentatively because, having worked with Dave Pickersgill on his excellent history of ‘The Worksop and Retford Brewery,’ I am aware that new information is always coming to light and that the narrative will change. With this in mind I am putting out a last call for any new photographs or information related to the years 1861-1930.

I will start work on the second volume 1930-2017 as soon as the first book is ready to print.

I will be sharing photographs and stories about the club with The Worksop Archaeological and Local History Society on Thursday, March 23, at 7.30pm at The Station Hotel and I am happy to talk to other groups and individuals who are interested.
