Reader letter: GMT is now meaningless

Our clocks have gone back to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), but to me the ‘M’ in GMT stands for ‘Meaningless’ because it is meaningless to a majority of people in England and Wales.

In the last 25 years, there has been talk about scrapping GMT and replacing it with ‘double summer time’ and four years ago, there was a Commons’ vote on that policy and 92 MPs favoured this changeover and 10 MPs opposed it.

It was a silly waste of time, ballot papers and cost of our tax money bothering to have that vote.

Although I prefer no GMT in winter, and summer time have it doubled, I think that they might as well quit talking about making this move because it always ends up with it not happening!
