Experts say the potential for an infestation increases over holiday periods as the rodents search for shelter.

Idle offices, factories and warehouses are particularly vulnerable and owners have this week been urged to do all they can to keep their premises pest free.

Acting chief executive of professional pest control register Basis Prompt, Stephen Jacob, said: “Anywhere that offers a dry space with little human traffic is ideal so business premises, factories and warehouses are at particular risk over holiday periods when most are not being used.

“The rodents can cause a lot of damage to equipment and electrics as well as valuable stock and they also carry diseases.”
