Portas Town plan is a step ahead...

A PLAN to boost trade in Gainsborough took a step forward after a successful meeting of the Town Centre Partnership.

The meeting was to discuss the bid for Gainsborough to develop a ‘town team’.

The Government wants 12 towns to pilot the strategy devised by retail guru Mary Portas, aimed at revitalising Britain’s ailing high streets.

If successful, Gainsborough would benefit from £100,000 funding.

“We want to promote the uniqueness and heritage within the town but realising it needs to be a thriving, multi-purpose, functional centre,” said town centre manager David Hawkins.

“We need to shout about Gainsborough and talk the town up, whether that is through better signage at the gateways into town or by other means.”

The application asks town teams to submit a video showing plans and enthusiasm for the scheme.

David said the next step was to finalise a plan and shoot the video.

One idea from the meeting was that Gainsborough could have a ‘shop and store’ service where shoppers could leave bags and bulky items in a secure location.

The next meeting is on 21st March at the Guildhall. To get involved contact David on 07795 522246 or [email protected]
