Nottinghamshire County Council has announced plans to replace household residual waste bins with smaller versions to reduce the amount going to landfill.

The measure is part of budget proposals designed to save £30m in a bid to cut £77m from its spend by 2017-18.

It comes as part of an effort to balance the books due to ongoing reductions in Government funding and demand for services.

Council leaders hope to save on disposal costs and to improve recycling and composting performance.

Residual waste refers to the waste that cannot be or is not separated for recycling or composting.

It is all the material, such as textiles, such ceramics or crisp packets, that the council cannot collect for recycling.

The scheme is likely to be trialled in just one district first to prove the concept before it is rolled out more widely.
