Throughout the coronavirus pandemic UK councils have been helping to provide vital services to our communities.

Councils were given £1.6 billion between them to respond to this crisis and I was pleased when it was announced this figure would be doubled to £3.2 billion.

As an MP it’s one of my jobs to lobby to make sure Bassetlaw receives its fair share of this.

So I was delighted to discover that Bassetlaw Council will be receiving £1,172,127 of this second tranche of funding (£1,243,564 in total) and Nottinghamshire County Council £14,647,716 (taking its total funding allocation to £36,993,227).

Nottinghamshire Fire Authority has also received £1,058,654 in total.

This week I was selected in the ballot for my first ‘virtual question’.

It’s very strange asking a virtual question in the House of Commons, being beamed onto the big screens there whilst sat in our living rooms on laptops.

Mine was made more interesting by my little boy plonking himself on my knee and subsequently blowing a raspberry at the screen.

My question was to Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and I asked about the steps his department has taken to enable local authorities to provide food and other support to those identified as extremely vulnerable.

I also took the opportunity to highlight the excellent work done by our voluntary organisations, such as Bassetlaw Community & Voluntary Service and Bassetlaw Action Centre.

Robert’s constituency also covers part of the Bassetlaw district, so he knew these organisations and praised their efforts, which was really nice to hear.

I recently launched the ‘Best of Bassetlaw’ campaign for people to

nominate their community champions and I have been inundated with responses.

Our first winner is Allison Palmer of Nanna P’s Bespoke Catering Creations, who has donated around 2,000 homemade cupcakes to key workers all over the region.

Thank you Allison.
