The 73-year-old, who is thought to live in Glasgow, was brought in for questioning by Nottinghamshire detectives as part of Operation Xeres, which is investigating abuse at several council-run homes dating back to the 1940s.

The suspect is believed to have been quizzed over the rape of a seven-year-old. He has been bailed pending further enquiries.

Operation Xeres was launched last April to look at complainants from former residents of children’s homes north of Nottingham, including former homes in Mansfield, Ashfield and Worksop.

More than 70 potential perpetrators have been identified as part of the police probe into abuse at children’s homes - but this latest arrest is only the fifth the police have made.
