Worksop cancer charity changes the way it delivers services in response to coronavirus

Following the temporary closure of the Aurora Wellbeing Centre, the charity will be replacing face-to-face consultations with a telephone support service during the coronavirus pandemic.

The charity, that supports people affected by a cancer diagnosis or living with a long term health condition, will continue to offer access to its team of highly trained wellbeing practitioners, who can provide vital support to individuals, also signposting to its own support services and to those across the locality that continue to operate.

Aurora is in the process of developing its plans to continue providing the best possible support to local people while following Government directives.

Aurora’s wellbeing practitioners will be working as usual, but providing their support service by telephone. They will continue to carry out holistic health needs assessments for newly diagnosed patients and those people wishing to self-refer to the Aurora service.

Additional emotional support will be offered through Aurora’s telephone and skype counselling service, and support will continue for existing clients who require ongoing help with a variety of issues.

Aurora is uncertain how long these measures will be in place, but the charity will continue to review the services it can provide, offering as much support as possible, including online resources and advice and information.

Debra Fores, centre manager at Aurora Wellbeing Centre at the Old Library Building, Worksop said: “It is a priority for us to continue to offer as much support as we possibly can.

“Dealing with a cancer diagnosis and living with long term health conditions presents many challenges, and we are aware that our clients are likely to face additional stresses at this time.

“We are looking at ways in which we can continue to support the needs of our clients and maintaining access to a listening ear and directing individuals to other support services is crucial. Our aim is to keep in touch and we are encouraging people to get in touch with us and let us know if they need support.”

All other activities at the Aurora Wellbeing Centres have been suspended, including beauty therapies and exercise classes, also the closure of the charity shops, tearoom, and all social and support groups.
