Albert Rogers called Ward B6 to pass on a message to his wife, to tell her that he was feeling unwell and could not visit that day. Luckily, Carol Whitehead, who has worked at the hospital for almost 30 years, took his call and asked about the nature of his illness.

Albert had been experiencing chest pains, and during their conversation, where it was discovered that his family had a history of heart problems, Carol advised him to dial 999 immediately. Mr Rogers was admitted to Bassetlaw Hospital shortly after and was transferred to Sheffield for a life-saving stent. He said: “I don’t know what would have happened if Carol hadn’t told me to call an ambulance. Her quick thinking saved my life.”

Carol was named as Bassetlaw Hospital’s Star of the Month for her life-saving advice.
