Special tribute planned for Worksop man who loved cycling

The family and friends of a Worksop man who has had a huge influence on the local cycling community are planning a guard of honour tribute at his funeral next week.

Doug Bond has been described as a local legend to the Blyth community where he lived.

Brett Knight, aged 49, Doug’s friend, said: “We would meet every Sunday for a drink and spend hours talking about cycling.

“He was the youngest old bloke I’ve ever known.

“Everyone here knows him as a great man.”

Doug once owned a cycling-themed cafe on Blyth High Street called the Light House Cafe.

Doug Bond’s funeral will be on Monday, August 3, at 12pm at the St Mary and St Martin's Church in Blyth.

They will follow a special path which will pass the White Swan, the High Street, the Northern Garden Centre and will finish at the church.

All of these places had significance to Doug as he visited them frequently.

The hearse will leave at approximately 11.35am.

Brett said: “Doug was at every big cycling race that happened.

“Sometimes he marshalled or handed out prizes but everyone there knew who he was.

“He was so passionate about cycling and he inspired so many people.

If non-cyclists would like to pay their respects to Doug they can meet on The Green and High Street at 11.40am.

When the hearse reaches the church it will pause so that if any cyclists wish to form a guard of honour along the church path they can.

Due to Covid-19 there are only 30 mourners allowed inside the church.

Doug's family are hoping to put any donations towards a commemorative bench in his honour.
