Post Office seek views as Harworth branch remains closed

The Post Office are urging Harworth people to make their views known regarding the closure of the town’s branch on Main Street.

It was shut in November following the resignation of its postmaster however a replacement has yet to be found.

The closest alternative is almost a mile away on Scrooby Road - leaving many elderly people in Harworth unable to access the service.

In a consultation letter to customers the Post Office wrote how the vacancy was currently being advertised.

However they added: “Future provision will reflect customer numbers and usage and we may take the opportunity to establish an alternative type of service.

“This may be a local style branch which runs alongside an established retail shop in newly refurbished premises and creates a more modern and convenient experience for customers.”

Speaking about the closure Lynne Schuller, Bassetlaw district councillor for Harworth, said: “Parking can be quite difficult near the Scrooby Road branch – which causes problems for vulnerable elderly and disabled people.”

Coun Schuller also told how it was ‘crazy’ that services were closing down as development planned for Harworth’s colliery site would mean a big increase in its population.

She said: “When you consider we are regenerating the area and basically doubling in size with the amount of houses being built in Harworth and Bircotes this doesn’t make sense.

“We will have a large influx of people into this area and now we’re closing one of the biggest infrastructure areas.”
