Actor and educator Tom Cable, who has been known to portray Nottinghamshire legends such as Lord Byron and Robin Hood, won ‘The Nottingham Roosevelt Travelling Memorial Scholarship’ earlier this year and has been supported by Nottinghamshire County Council to travel and research the journey of the Mayflower Pilgrims.

Tom teaches primary school students about historical characters. He will spend just over a month in the United States, before returning to share his learnings with Nottinghamshire.

He said: “I am delighted to be the Mayflower scholar for the Nottingham Roosevelt Scholarship and to represent myself, my business Blue Kazoo and Nottinghamshire across New England. There are many themes that can be raised around the story of the Mayflower Pilgrims including immigration, democracy and human rights that were relevant then and remain so today. I am working hard to prepare for what I think will be an adventure of a lifetime and really encourage other young people with great ideas to consider applying for the 2020 scholarship.”

In recent years, fields of research and interest that have been explored by the scholarship include construction, sustainability, social enterprise, fundraising, digital arts and nursing, all sharing one consistent theme, which is to bring knowledge home to benefit the individual and the county of Nottinghamshire.

Mick Burrows, former chief executive of Nottinghamshire County Council and chairman of the scholarship, said: "It's a very special moment for our scholarship as we celebrate 70 years since the first scholars arrived in America. It's unique, it's life-changing and it's benefited not just Nottinghamshire activities but has also impacted on a number of national developments through the ongoing work of past and present scholars.

“I am very proud, along with my fellow trustees in ensuring it continues to build long lasting relationships with the United States.”

The Nottingham Roosevelt Scholarship is open to people aged 21 to 35 in Nottinghamshire. Applications can be made before March 6 at rooseveltscholarship.org.
