New bridge will see bridleway reopen in Scrooby

The rights of way network has seen a huge surge in usage over the past year, with more people using footpaths and bridleways to access the Nottinghamshire countryside.

But Bridleway 1 in Bassetlaw which links Scrooby and Mattersey Thorpe, has been inaccessible for users due to extensive damage to a bridge.

Following months of planning, Via East Midlands are currently on-site working to install a new bridge which will allow walkers, cyclist and horse riders to use the bridleway for the first time in over 12 months.

The bridge is being fabricated by a local company and is due to be erected on the bridleway before the end of March, ready for the warmer weather.

The works have had to be carefully planned due to the close proximity to the East Coast Mainline and local flood plains.

Councillor John Cottee, chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Communities and Place Committee said: “Our rights of way network is a fantastic resource for residents across the county.

“It has been used more than ever with people exercising, exploring and staying local throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This new bridge in Scrooby will open up access to a range of users in Bassetlaw and its completion this spring will ensure residents can enjoy the local countryside in the area throughout the summer months,” he added.
