Priory Court - which has taken two years to build - features 52 modern apartments.

The new homes - adapted with handrails and accessible showers - are designed to enable pensioners to live independently.

However for those who need 24-hour access to care staff will be available at the 52-apartment complex.

Residents will have access to help with washing, dressing, getting to and from the toilet, help with medication, preparing snacks and heating up meals, laundry and some domestic tasks.

A number of assessment apartments will also be located at Priory Court - the former site of the Abbey Grove Sheltered Scheme.

The county council’s adult social care workers will use them to gauge what pensioners need to live independently and regain the skills to return home.

The new four-storey accommodation includes 38 one-bedroom flats and 14 two-bedroom flats as well as a hair salon, a library, resident lounges and an activity room.

Bassetlaw Council chief proud to see new Worksop residential care home opened

James Forrester, a former resident of Abbey Grove and one of the first residents of Priory Court, said: “It’s a fantastic place - the best bit is the people.

“Everyone is so lovely and it’s nice to be back with some of the other people who lived at Abbey Grove.

“When I had to move out I lived in one of the bungalows across the road so I’ve seen the place being built from scratch - it’s a wonderful home and I’m very happy here.”

Bassetlaw councillor Steve Scotthorne said the accommodation would allow elderly residents to live as independently as possible ‘with the reassurance that care is onsite for them 24 hours a day if needed’.

The £8.35 million project was led Bassetlaw District Council with funding of £1.224 million provided by Homes England and £2.96 million by Nottinghamshire County Council - who will provide extra care services for up to 27 future residents.
