How do you cheer up your five-year-old son when he’s missed out on playing at his favourite football team’s stadium, lost the chance to be their mascot, and has lost his birthday party?

By turning his bedroom into the best Doncaster Rovers tribute in the land, if you’re Harworth mum Kerry Hickling.

Kerry felt awful for son Oliver Law when lockdown saw plans for his sixth birthday, on May 15, collapse. Family were to visit for cake on the Friday, Saturday was to see a magician perform at his party, and Sunday would see him play for Harworth Colliery under sevens in a tournament at the Keepmoat. He was to be a Rovers mascot for their last game of the season.

Instead, Kerry told him he could have his bedroom redecorated – and when he asked for a Rovers room she pulled out all the stops.

He now has red and white striped walls, a bed inside a goal, and a Rovers changing room area, complete with club shirts hanging from the pegs, as well as the Rovers bed covers and curtains. Players James Coppinger and Matty Blair have sent messages praising the decor.

Kerry said: “We wanted to do something to make him happy even though to be honest he hasn’t stopped smiling during the lockdown and he has handled the cancelled football training and swimming lessons better than I thought.

“His bedroom previously was Disney cars and a dark blue so I knew to turn this into red and white was going to take some hours. But he is worth it.

“He went to his first game a week before he turned two years old.

“Home games are something we look forward to and occasionally he has been to some away games.

“Olly loves football and Rovers will always be his number one team but he also loves supporting our local club Harworth Colliery when he can’t get to the away games. “

Oliver loves his bedroom, and said it deserved 1,000 million and 10 thumbs ups.

“The appreciation from Olly for his room has made all the long nights worth it,” said Kerry, who spent seven days on the redecorating.
