Kelly Stevens’ son Reece Deverick, 16, was pushed to the ground by a gang of 15 youths then kicked repeatedly - even having his head stamped on during the February 8 attack.

However, despite her son being left concussed by the onslaught police failed to attend A&E to take a statement as arranged over the phone and - after repeated attempts to contact them - Kelly was told to wait until March 3 to meet with police.

The terrified teen - whose glasses were broken - was left with a badly swollen face and concussion following the brutal assault.

Speaking about the attack on February 8 Kelly told how she heard Reece’s friend - who witnessed the attack - ‘hammering on the door’.

She said: “I went running out the door and saw Reece laid on the drive - he wasn’t able to stand and couldn’t speak.

“I managed to carry him with one of my friends and rang the paramedics and the police.

“They started kicking him and stamping on his head - one of them had run up and kicked him in the jaw - he’s been really lucky they could have killed him.

“It was awful as a nurse to see my child not able to stand up - I was screaming.

“It’s had a massive effect on us - I’m having to take both boys to school and pick them up because they’re scared.”

Senior nurse Kelly says a paramedic informed police from her home on Browning Close that Reece had sustained a head injury and was told police would meet the family at Bassetlaw Accident and Emergency - however no officers attended.

Kelly claims she phoned 101 four times and on one occasion an officer failed to attend after school as arranged after turning up earlier in the day while the teen was in class.

Meanwhile the frantic mum says her scared younger son - Jack Stevens, 12, - had been told those responsible had been bragging about it and would do the same again.

Mother-of-three Kelly, 33, fears Reece’s attackers will evade justice as CCTV evidence from neighbours houses which may have captured the attack would now have been written over by fresh footage.

Kelly said she had eventually been contacted by police who had arranged to take her statement on March 3 but was left feeling angry.

She said: “The only thing I want is justice for my son and for this not to happen to anyone else.

“I’ve heard these lads weren’t all teenagers and some of them looked to be in their early 20s.

“It makes me angry but scared at the thought that they could do something like this again.”

A police spokesman said on Thursday: “We were called at around 5.45pm on February 8 following a report of an assault.

“A teenage boy was treated by paramedics at the scene and it was reported that his injuries weren't life altering.

“Despite the force’s best efforts other higher-risk incidents dictated that the response teams did not make it to this particular incident.

“Unfortunately a statement hadn't been obtained previously as local officers were committed to other incidents in the area and due to the availability of the family to attend the police station.”

Police told the Guardian they had arranged to visit the family on Thursday afternoon.

Nottinghamshire Police is appealing for anyone who saw the incident or has information to phone 101 - quoting incident 713 of 8 February 2020.
