Dedicated Worksop student set for national role with Sea Cadets

Sea Cadet Jonathan Hornagold, 17, was sworn in as a ‘First Sea Lord Cadet’ for 2020, at an investiture on HMS Victory in Portsmouth.Jonathan was chosen to represent Eastern Area Sea Cadets, taking up his role on January 1 and will act as an ambassador to raise the profile of Sea Cadets, while gaining privileged insight into the higher levels of the Royal Navy.

He is one of six Cadets who will be present at formal parades, ship visits, royal occasions, opening ceremonies, presentations, awards and receptions.

During their year as First Sea Lord Cadets, they will also gain exposure to Navy board members, trustees of parent Cadet organisations, organise and build area forums and provide feedback to their respective headquarters.

A keen canoeing instructor, Jonathan is the assistant training officer for Worksop Sea Cadets, normally held by adult volunteers.

Studying physics, psychology and business A-levels, he has ambitions to forge a career in the Royal Navy and possibly attend university to study psychology.

The First Sea Lord, Admiral Tony Radakin, joined the cadets for its investiture in the great cabin on HMS Victory.

He said: “We, the Royal Navy, are the beneficiaries of what Sea Cadets do. What they create in and beyond their units is fantastic for the nation, their enthusiasm and commitment is phenomenal.”“My Cadets should take enormous confidence and pride in what they have achieved, whether for Sea Cadets or in their broader lives, but more importantly in how they are growing up as young men and women.”

Captain Phil Russell RN, captain of Sea Cadets, said: “There is no higher honour for Sea Cadets than to become a First Sea Lord Cadet. These amazing cadets are selected not only for their commitment and achievements but also for their ability to represent the views of Sea Cadets at national level. We are looking forward to seeing them fulfil these roles with distinction over the coming year.”
