Horrified neighbours called the police but the injured woman was not prepared to make a complaint.

Craig Thorpe, 43, of Greenacre Road, admitted assaulting Laura Manghan causing her actual bodily harm last December.

She slapped the rear of his VW Bora car as he got in and drove off up the road following the argument in the street, said Gary Short, prosecuting at Nottingham Crown Court.

Thorpe drove back as his partner stood in the middle of the road, hitting her head-on resulting in her ending up on the bonnet. The car went round the corner with her on the bonnet and minutes later the victim was seen hobbling back to the house, with bruises to her legs, cuts to her hands and swelling.

When breathalysed, Thorpe was more than twice the legal drink drive limit.

In mitigation it was said Thorpe was deeply ashamed and had acted completely out of character.

Judge John Milmo said he treated him as a man of good character. The sentence was 12 months prison suspended for two years, with probation supervision and attendance on a domestic abuse programme. Thorpe was disqualified from driving for 12 months and fined £450.
