Panthers in 4-1 derby win

Nottingham Panthers came out on top in their derby clash with Sheffield Steelers on Sunday night, at a new-look Motorpoint Arena.

Last season’s Elite Ice Hockey League champions ran out 4-1 winners, with Matt Francis playing a starring role.

Francis gave Panthers the lead on 6.29, before Stephen Lee’s second period goal made it 2-0 to the visitors.

Jonathan Phillips pulled a goal back for Sheffield on the powerplay, but Nottingham were soon two goals head once more, veteran David Clarke beating Steelers netminder Frank Doyle.

The win was complete in the third period, Francis bagging his second goal and the Man of the Match Award with seven minutes remaining.
