Pair arrested for speed trap arson

TWO men have been arrested and charged in connection with an arson attack on a speed camera.

Police launched a lengthy covert investigation after the attack on the road safety device at Hemswell, near Gainsborough, on 18th October last year.

Officers seized evidence at the scene and gathered intelligence over a number of months, finally charging two men.

Ashley Rowlands, 29, and Anthony Luty, 22, both from the Doncaster area, were arrested last week.

Rowlands was charged with arson and conspiracy to commit arson, while Luty was charged with conspiracy to commit arson and perverting the course of justice.

Both men were bailed to appear before magistrates on 12th June 2012.

A spokesman for the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership explained the Hemswell speed camera had been installed of rising injuries along that particular road.

“The year prior to the camera being attacked there were no incidents of injuries occurring at that site,” he said.

“Since the camera has been put out of action, one person has received slight injuries from a collision that may have been avoided had the camera been working.”
