Ordsall: Man robbed by bogus workers

The incident occurred around 12.45pm last Friday (9th May) when a man in an unmarked white van knocked on the side door of a house in Millfield Close.

He said he worked for the council and needed to measure a fence in the back garden as it needed replacing.

As the victim led the visitor to the fence, officers believe another person entered the house and stole cash.

The bogus official was described as white, between 5ft 4in to 5ft 10in tall, and of medium, toned build.

He was in his late 30s, with short, dark auburn hair.

He spoke with a local accent and was wearing blue work dungarees, with a pocket in the front.

Underneath was a blue round-necked, long-sleeved sweatshirt. He wore black shoes or boots.

The man was driving a white transit-style van with ladder on the roof.

Detective Constable Rich Cashmore said: “This took place in the middle of the day in a small cul-de-sac, certainly not something that would go unnoticed.”

“Did you see anything of note, or have you fallen victim to a similar scam? If so, call us.”

DC Cashmore went on to reiterate police advice about callers to the door.

“Don’t forget to check ID when approached by someone offering a service,” he said.

“And never take their word for it. Cross-check their card details with a directory and call that number to verify.”

“If you are not sure, simply don’t open the door.
