I campaigned against this because it would take police off our streets whilst they ferried prisoners to cells in Mansfield and Newark.
They would also have to decide not to arrest people so that they could maintain policing levels in the town.
The criminal elements in this area would have been absolutely delighted about the closure.
The predictions have been proved to be correct and the recent proposal to have a mobile custody unit at peak times will not answer these problems. The van still needs police to escort the prisoners until they can be processed elsewhere.
We all want a first class police service and the quality of what we currently get has been badly affected by the police cell closure. This decision needs to be reversed immediately.
