Horticultural Autumn Fayre

A buzz greeted you as the Anston Parish Hall was full once more for this popular end of season event. The added spice to the event is the children’s Halloween fancy dress competition, which was as competitive as ever with cash prizes on offer.

Artistic Alf had once again entered but was disqualified by the judges on an age issue. But in the end the clear winner was 20-month-old Caitlin Schofield who had made the long trip over from Woodhouse Mill to enter.

Caitlin is pictured above with her mum and grandma along with some of the Horticultural Society members. This was Caitlin’s first attempt at a fancy dress competition and I must say she took it all in her stride and said she would be back next year to defend her title.

The members had once again done a great job with several stalls available including plants, toys, cakes, tombola, bric-a-brac, books and craft stalls. As ever the noisiest place was the refreshment area where many were catching up with friends old and new.

There is always plenty going on at the Horticultural Society and last Monday Andrew Firth was the guest speaker at Anston Parish Hall. The subject was Christmas in the Dales and once again this event was well attended and one of many throughout the year.

The Christmas shindig is the next big event that I am reliably informed will be held around Christmas time, and then the green fingered brigade will be looking forward to the New Year when the growing season begins once again.
