The issue of fly-tipping is one that seems to get everyone frustrated, including councillors like myself.

There is absolutely no excuse for dumping waste on our streets and in our countryside.

As a council, we have a number of tools at our disposal when we are presented with evidence of someone fly-tipping.

These include issuing fixed penalty notices and court action where fly-tippers can receive a large fine or even a custodial sentence.

Seizing a vehicle is another power available to us and a couple of weeks ago environmental health officers seized a transit van that was caught on CCTV fly-tipping and seen by a council officer on duty in the area.

Fly-tipping is a blight on our beautiful district and it is largely carried out by people who do not want to pay the price of getting rid of their waste properly.

It is costly to clear up and can damage our environment.

I hope to see more action like this taken against individuals who commit environmental crime in Bassetlaw.

If you see fly-tipping taking place, please take down the make and model of the vehicle and the registration plate and report this to us.

Staying on the theme of environmental enforcement, our partners district

enforcement have been out and about in Bassetlaw issuing fixed penalty notices to anyone seen deliberately dropping litter, cigarette butts and failing to pick up after their dog.

Dog fouling is an issue that is constantly being raised with Councillors and something that we have been keen to address through our new enforcement measures.

In the three weeks that district enforcement have been working with us,

enforcement officers have issued ten fixed penalty notices of £100 for dog fouling across Bassetlaw, which is a fantastic result.

Finally, like me, you may have been supporting some of our local restaurants, cafes and pubs through the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.

This sector of business has been particularly hit hard throughout the Coronavirus pandemic so I’d like to encourage readers to take advantage of this scheme and support local business, if you are able to, before it ends later this month.
