As a council, we are acutely aware of our responsibility to deliver services and your priorities, and providing value for money, writes Coun Andre Camilleri, deputy cabinet member for finance and resources at Nottinghamshire County Council.

Therefore, despite the challenging outlook facing all local authorities, we are proud of our proven track record in delivering well-run, efficient services while keeping Council Tax low.

This means we will always look at ways of embracing and investing in technology which can help us to improve the delivery of key services moving forward.

Here at Nottinghamshire County Council, we have carried out trials of artificial intelligence (AI) software to help streamline work in departments such as social care and education, which has improved efficiency by freeing up time for frontline staff.

For example, we are looking to use AI to help generate Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) as part of our ongoing drive to hit the Government’s 50 per cent target by the end of the academic year.

It goes without saying that our work with AI is designed to make challenging processes for individuals so much easier, with the aim of making improvements to the services we deliver for you. That must be the ultimate objective.

However, while AI presents significant opportunities for innovation and efficiency, it is also important that we also take a measured approach and learn from the challenges and experiences faced by other authorities.

Yes, it has the potential to revolutionise the way we deliver services and we are keen to embrace it further, but it is still a rapidly evolving technology and, I believe, some of its uses still remain uncertain.

"My colleagues and I are excited about the possibilities AI offers, but it is essential that we balance innovation with responsibility", says Coun Andre Camilleri."My colleagues and I are excited about the possibilities AI offers, but it is essential that we balance innovation with responsibility", says Coun Andre Camilleri.

Therefore, this means we will never rush into implementing systems without fully understanding their impact on both our residents and our services.

We will work hard to understand how artificial intelligence has worked elsewhere and ensure that these technologies align with our values and are in the public’s best interest.

My colleagues and I are excited about the possibilities AI offers, but it is essential that we balance innovation with responsibility and, while our goal is to stay ahead of the curve, we must always lead in a way that fosters trust and accountability.
