Bassetlaw District Council leader urges everyone to download NHS Covid 1pp

I'd like to kick off this week's column by encouraging people to download the new NHS Covid 19 app.

Using contact tracing, the app detects and logs other nearby app users. It also enables all users to 'check in' when they visit a venue by scanning a QR code displayed on posters at the entrance.

Both features then inform the user via an alert if someone they have come in to contact with later tests positive for Coronavirus.

We should also keep following the key rules of washing hands often, wearing a face covering in public places and when car sharing and keeping two metres apart whenever possible.

As we are now officially in autumn and the nights are starting to draw in, one of the things the council is looking at is emergency provision and winter shelter for rough sleepers.

Due to Covid there will be no shared drop ins as in previous years so we have to offer something different.

We want to make sure that no one has to sleep on the streets and that everyone has a housing pathway before the weather starts to get colder.

If you know of somebody who already knows they have nowhere to sleep this winter, and are likely to need emergency accommodation, please contact the council's housing needs team as soon as possible on 01909 533533 or the Nottinghamshire street outreach team on 0800 0665356.

Anyone presenting as homeless will be offered immediate short-term accommodation for a couple of nights to give the council time to put route into longer term housing in place.

People sleeping on the streets often have complex and chaotic lives, so we want people to come forward now, before it gets cold and get the right accommodation put in place.

Finally, it was great to see that Worksop Railway Station was highly commended in the prestigious National Rail Awards for medium-sized station of the year.

The station was praised by judges for a ‘tasteful transformation into an impressive railhead with close ties to the community’.

Well done to Northern Railway, the Friends of Worksop Station, the Railway Heritage Trust, Network Rail and North Notts & Lincs Community Rail Partnership.
