Bassetlaw council leader says lockdown is no excuse for domestic violence

There has been a large increase of calls to the Nottinghamshire 24 hour helpline and the National Domestic Abuse Helpline has seen a 50 per cent increase in calls since lockdown.

There is never an excuse for domestic violence and abuse, no matter what the circumstances are.

For anyone in lockdown who feels that they are at risk of abuse, there is help and support available.

The Government’s rules on household isolation because of coronavirus do not apply if you need to leave your home to escape domestic abuse.

Friends, family and neighbours can all offer a vital lifeline to those living with domestic abuse.

If you are worried that someone you know may be a victim of domestic abuse, please reassure them that the police and support services are still here to help.

In all cases of immediate danger, call 999 and ask for the police.

If you are in danger and unable to talk on the phone, dial 999, listen to the questions from the operator and respond by coughing or tapping the handset if you can.

If you are on a mobile and can’t talk safely, you do not have to speak, just press 55 to transfer your call to the police.

The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is open 24 hours a day on 0808 2000 247 and is totally confidential.

There is lots of help online, including the Refuge website which has information on identifying the signs of domestic abuse, and a safety guide for women and children who are living with a perpetrator.

Boots has also partnered with charity Hestia to offer safe spaces in their stores.
