Bassetlaw Council is already planning for a brighter post-Covid future

It is just over a year since the first case of Coronavirus was reported in the UK and in this time we have all become acutely aware of the huge impact the virus has had.

For many of us, we are in a state of stasis, but as a council, we cannot stand still and in addition to dealing with the here and now, we are looking to the future and investing in our towns and people’s futures.

The Worksop Access to Skills hub has captured the headlines recently, but this is just one of the many projects that we are working on, or have achieved, to ensure that once life gets back to a new normal we are ready to support our local economy, create jobs and training for local people and provide social housing.

Work is progressing well on the Middletons project which, with an investment of £3.96 million, is creating a multipurpose business hub that will offer employment opportunities and bring increased footfall into the town centre to support existing businesses.

The £2.3 million Bridge Street heritage scheme continues to rejuvenate some of our most historic town centre buildings.

And last week, we announced that we are investing in our parks with the addition of new facilities at the Canch.

Last year, we opened a state of the art Independent Living Centre, Priory Court, and plans to transform an unsightly patch of land in Manton into a development for 120 modular homes will start very soon.

This is all backed up with strategic planning through the Draft Bassetlaw Local Plan and the Worksop Masterplan that will shape long-term development, investment and the delivery of essential infrastructure beyond the pandemic.

I’d like to remind residents, about two Covid-19 community testing sites in Worksop that now offer rapid tests.

One in three people with Covid-19 have no symptoms and could be spreading the disease without knowing it.

Testing to identify those showing no symptoms will mean finding positive cases more quickly and break the chains of transmission.

The testing centres are located at Manton Sports and Crown Place Community Centre on Sandy Lane.
