Olympic fun in Dinnington

THE Dinnington community will come together later this month to take part in a day packed with sporting and cultural activities.

The first ever Dinnolympix - a community games - will take place at Dinnington Miners Welfare Recreation Ground on Friday 17th August.

There will something for everyone with activities for all ages including a variety of sport, crafts and face painting.

A highlight of the day will be the Dinnolympix gala king and queen contest.

The event has been organised by local organisations and residents including the Dinnington Salvation Army, Friends of Dinnington Miners Welfare, Rother Valley South Area Assembly and other partners.

It has been funded by Dinnington Town Council and Community Games.

Coun Jacquie Falvey said: “This will be a great day for local families to get together (in the sun) and enjoy a mix of sports and games.”

“We also would like them to take the opportunity to talk informally about where they live and how they would like to see it in the future.”

“I would encourage everyone to come along and enjoy the day.”

“Hopefully this will be the first of what we hope will be an annual event.”

Dinnolympix runs from 11am-3pm. There will be free refreshments throughout the day including a barbecue.

The event is part of the Community Games programme across the country.

The programme is inspired by London 2012 and are funded by a £2 million Big Society Fund.

It is the brainchild of Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games.
