Obesity surgery has increased

The number of people opting for weight loss surgery has risen in the region according to a top surgeon.

Srinivasan Balchandra, consultant upper GI and bariatric surgeon for Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust, said on average between 80 and 100 people elect to have weight loss surgery each year. The bariatric surgery service was introduced in the region three years ago and patients are often referred by their GP.

The bariatric team at the trust consists of a specialist nurses, dietician, anaesthetist, psychologist, physicians and surgeon who all assist with a patients requirements.
