Granby Carlton Nursery is also the first in Nottinghamshire and the only nursery in the east midlands to have achieved the honour, which is a quality mark for excellence in paediatric first aid for early years settings.

And the award completes an outstanding 2016 for the nursery after was awarded an outstanding rating by Ofsted for the third year running earlier in the year.

Jacqui Hannaby, the nursery’s manager, beamed: “This a great achievement for us and hopefully we can be an inspiration to the rest of Nottinghamshire and even the rest of the east midlands and the country.”

The Millie’s Mark honour was awarded after the nursery successfully completing a process that involved intensive support from an NDNA mentor, completion of an audit, risk assessment and spot checks.

The status was created by charity Millie’s Trust with the Department for Education and is being administered by National Day Nurseries Association.

Millie’s Trust was formed in 2012 by Joanne and Dan Thompson, whose daughter Millie died after choking on food at her nursery in Stockport.

The trust has campaigned tirelessly for all early years staff to be trained in paediatric first aid.

All nurseries achieving Millie’s Mark have their own individual policies and procedures in exemplary practice..

Jacqui continued: “Millie’s parents wanted everyone who works in nurseries to be first aid trained and this is something we’ve done all along anyway.

“And now Millie’s parents wanted to create a mark for nurseries who have done this to show parents that we have worked towards this and highlight the fact that we are 100 per cent first aid trained at all times.

“We’re very passionate about training and first aid training here at the nursery and to be one of only 10 in the country to achieve this mark is a great honour for us and very rewarding.

“It also means that we can show parents that we have achieved this and it’s a mark that parents will see and recognise and it means new parents thinking of bringing their child to the nursery will have seen in the news and will show them that all the staff here are full qualified in first aid.

“It’s training that we use all the time, the auditor that we used when we got the accreditation is the same one we use each time to ensure we keep to the same standard.”

Jacqui hopes the achievement of Granby Carlton will now inspire other nurseries across the county to try and achieve a Millie’s Mark themselves.

She said: “We were the first one in the East Midlands to get this and we’re very proud to be able to say that.

“I hope other nurseries will see this and be encouraged to take on getting the accreditation themselves as well.

The awarding of Millie’s Mark is another celebration for the nursery following their glowing Ofsted report earlier in the year.

Jacqui said: “The rating was based on the end of the last financial year and we are one of only three nurseries in Nottinghamshire to receive an outstanding rating three consecutive times.

“So this means we are now in the top 200 nurseries in the country and we’ve achieved a Millie’s Mark too so it’s been a great year.

“This is all something we have always aspired to do, continue our professional development with our practitioners and continuing to achieve the best for the nursery and the children who attend our nursery as well.”
