They held their first meeting and launch event at the Priory Gatehouse on Priorswell Road in Worksop on Saturday 31st March.
Acting secretary Shirley Hoyland said that the launch meeting was a great success.
“We were so pleased with the terrific response we received,” she said. “There were over 71 people there - all sharing their ideas.”
“Our chairman gave a terrific presentation and it was a very interactive session.”
She continued: “We were talking with the audience, rather than just at them, about what we all identify about what they do and don’t like about Worksop and what we can do to improve things.”
“The main thing that came up that people like about the town, is that we have space to breathe and live in Worksop and are surrounded by beautiful countryside. It was said that more should be done to improve signage so we can extol the virtues of our natural assets.”
She added: “It also came up that people who have moved to Worksop from elsewhere tend to appreciate how lucky we are as a town in comparison to other places - it tends to be those that don’t know anywhere else who bring it down and don’t see all that we have to offer.”
“I would encourage anyone who wants to work together for the good of Worksop to please come along to our next meeting.”
Guardian editor and Worksop Civic Society chairman Chris Burton was at the meeting and was hopeful about what could be achieved by the group in the future.
“The launch of the civic society will hopefully bring together people who have a common aim - to improve certain aspects of where they live,” said Chris.
“As the editor of the Guardian I see lots of parallels between the aims of the steering group members and that of the newspaper, which I want to be an agent for positive change in the town.”
“That’s why I was delighted to get involved and to help out in any way I can.”
Chris added: “Hopefully many of our readers will recognise the great opportunity this society offers and will join up to help.”
The next meeting of the Worksop Civic Society will be on Wednesday 11th April at 5.15pm at the Bassetlaw Community and Voluntary Service, The Old Abbey School on Priorswell Road.
