Students, young people and those who drink have will be targeted with some hard hitting messages about safe road use as Notts firefighters stage a series of events in support of Road Safety Week this week.

The week, which is organised annually by the Chief Fire Officers Association, aims to raise awareness about how drivers and other road users can keep themselves, their passengers and others safe, reducing the number of deaths and injuries on our roads.

Events throughout the county will include highlighting the dangers of drink-driving and using a mobile phone for texting or calls while at the wheel.

“No matter how good a driver you think you are, it’s so easy to be distracted when behind the wheel ,” said group manager Keith Jones.

“Answering a call on a mobile phone, texting, changing a CD or interacting with passengers might all seem easy to do when driving, but you only need to break concentration for a second for it to end in disaster.”

“A large proportion of road traffic collisions involve young people between the ages of 17 and 25, and it was these people we are targetting specifically this week.”
