Notts: Trading Standards to carry out checks on firework retailers

Shops across Notts are being inspected by Trading Standards to make sure fireworks on sale are displayed and stored in a safe manner.

Officers from the county council will be inspecting premises registered to sell fireworks and will be looking out for potential hazards with on-site fireworks.

Live fireworks should be locked away from customers and not on open display.

Retailers and customers should store fireworks in a damp free area and not near flammable materials such as petrol, oil or paint.

Retail boxes of fireworks must not be split and sold separately and certain fireworks are banned for sale to the general public.

Licensed traders cannot sell fireworks to people under 18 and traders who breach this restriction can be fined up to £5,000.

Fireworks in the home should be stored in a lockable container or cabinet if there is a risk of children or animals having access.

Coun Glynn Gilfoyle, chair of Notts County Council’s community safety committee, said: “Whilst we are checking registered premises selling fireworks we are keen to hear from residents who have concerns about a shop selling fireworks without a licence or to young people.”

Residents with information on retailers selling fireworks inappropriately should call 08454 04 05 06.
