Notts: Streetlights being turned back on in three villages

Oldcotes, Scrooby and Styrrup are the first places to benefit from a decision by Notts County Council to reverse its part night lighting policy which was launched in 2010.

The part night lighting project has seen 6,116 streetlights across the county converted to part night lighting, with lights being turned off between the hours of midnight and 5.30am.

With the on-going rise in energy prices the council is continuing to implement a programme of street lighting energy-saving measures to help control costs.

But following a decision by the council’s policy committee street lights can be switched back on, where supported by residents, the local county councillor and chairman of the Transport and Highways committee.

Oldcotes, Scrooby and Styrrup are areas where residents and their local county councillor have already requested lights go back on because of concerns over crime.

Approximately 65 lights. which are currently part-night lit, will be returned to full all night illumination.

Chairman of the County Council’s transport and highway committee, Coun Kevin Greaves, said: “We have listened to residents’ concerns about the perceived risk of crime and personal safety in some of the areas in which the part night programme was introduced.

“These concerns included some elderly residents who felt more vulnerable without street lighting and those residents working shifts who set off for or returned from work without lighting.”
