Notts: Police warn motorists after spate of car crime

In the past month incidents have taken place at night with vehicles parked in driveways, car parks and on streets being targeted.

Satellite navigation systems are most commonly stolen but sunglasses, a wallet and a laptop have also been taken after being left on display or hidden in the vehicle.

Neighbourhood inspector, Simon Allardice, said: “These are opportunistic incidents – thieves walking past and chancing their luck when they see an item of value on display or a car or van that has been left unlocked.”

“It takes moments for this to happen. Don’t leave your vehicle unlocked even if you are nearby or think you are only going to be away for five minutes.”

“You might know it’s your dirty gym kit in that bag or a crisp packet in that lunch box but a thief might think it worth breaking in to check.”

Patrols are being increased and officers are also appealing to the public to play their part to ensure they don’t become a victim.
