Notts police leave tributes to Brussels attack victims

Police, councillors and members of parliament have spoken out to say their thoughts are with victims and their families who were affected by the tragic events.

At least 26 people are thought to have been killed after explosions at Zaventem Airport and a metro station in the city.

Nottinghamshire Police wrote on Twitter: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by today’s tragic events in Brussels.”

Nottingham British Transport Police also took to social media to show their support.

Their Twitter account said: “Terrible news in Brussels today, please stay vigilant and report anything suspicious no matter how trivial you think it may be. Stay safe.”

Councillor Alan Rhodes, leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “It’s shocking to hear that two devastating terrorist attacks have taken place at another European capital city.

“Our thoughts are with the victims and their families who have been affected by these horrific events at this difficult time.”

Members of the European Parliament for the East Midlands have also sent out messages of support on both social media and in interviews.

Glenis Willmott, Labour member, wrote: “Thoughts with everyone affected by the dreadful events in #Brussels today. I am safe in Parliament & will follow official security advice.”

Emma McClarkin, Conservative member, sent out advice to victims and their friends and relatives.

She said: “To all those who have friends and family in Brussels the local @foreignoffice helpline number is 0207 008 0000 #Bruxelles.”
