Notts: Mary Berry films episode of Who Do You Think You Are at Welbeck Bakehouse

The Great British Bake Off presenter Mary Berry has paid a visit to the Welbeck Bakehouse in North Notts to film an episode of the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are.

In the programme broadcast last week, it was revealed that her great-grandfather was a baker.

In order to recreate the type of baking that he would have done, and to illustrate how specialised this kind of work was, the TV crew came to The School of Artisan Food and the well-known Welbeck Bakehouse to use their facilities.

Mary Berry herself took hand-made loaves out of the wood fired ovens, having shaped and moulded them beforehand.

Helen Yates, managing director of the Bakehouse, said: “It was huge fun to have Mary here and a great recognition of the fantastic facilities for both the teaching about and making of real bread that we have here at Welbeck.”

Joe Piliero, director of The School of Artisan Food, which is on the same site at Welbeck as the Bakehouse, said: “We are teaching forgotten skills that Mary’s ancestor would have recognised. Partly due to interest generated by ‘Bake off’ we have students from all over the country, and abroad, knocking on our door for classes.”

The episode will be repeated on BBC2 on Thursday 25 September 2014.
