Notts: ‘Legal highs’ could be banned across county

The plans could ban hundreds of substances, including all ‘psychoactive’ chemicals other than caffeine and alcohol- a move that has already taken place in the Republic of Ireland.

There are national reports on the potential impact such substances have on people, including addiction, anti-social behaviour, violence, burglary and even death.

The Council seized untested drugs from premises in Bassetlaw earlier this year as they were suspected as being unsafe.

Coun Glynn Gilfoyle, Chair of the County Council’s Community Safety Committee, said: “We welcome any new laws that give us more powers to tackle the growing issue of so called ‘legal highs’.”

“Current laws don’t give a clear legal position on these drugs and we are concerned that they are a risk to health as they are not properly labelled and often contain a cocktail of chemicals that have not been tested.”

“We support the families who have been adversely affected by these drugs and are campaigning to have an outright ban to protect the public from harm.”
