Notts: Extra care schemes help to reduce loneliness

Findings from the International Longevity Centre found that 12.17 percent of people living in extra care housing experience loneliness compared to 22.83 percent living in the wider community, with more than four out of five extra care residents saying they never or hardly ever felt lonely.

There are now nine existing extra care schemes in Notts and the Notts County Council is investing £12.65m to support the creation of more extra care schemes across the county.

Plans are also developed for new extra care schemes across Notts, including Eastwood, Retford, Hucknall and Ollerton.

Coun Muriel Weisz, chair of the Adult Social Care and Health Committee, said: “Extra care offers the best of both worlds with communal areas and plenty of activities for residents, whilst each apartment boasts plenty of private space.

“This new research supports our plans to create more extra care schemes across the county as they have a positive impact on loneliness and isolation whilst giving older people an alternative to traditional residential care.”
