NOTTINGHAMSHIRE: Commissioner ‘free’ after week being tagged

Police and Crime Commissioner Paddy Tipping has been liberated again after a week wearing a brand new GPS electronic tag.

Rubbing a rather blue ankle in relief he explained that his morning run had been scuppered by the device which had left him bruised the first time he went out with it on.

“It’s been an experience, but a valuable one, it has shown me without doubt that the investment in this new technology was well worth it,” he said.

Wearing it over the Bank Holiday weekend posed some challenges for the Commissioner, particularly in the warm weather.

“Shorts and tag are not really the way forward in fashion for me and on Scarborough Beach, when I wanted to go in for a paddle, I didn’t dare in front of all those people,” he continued.

“The other thing that I hadn’t fully realised is that in order to keep it working you have to charge it up for an hour a day and I never normally sit down for an hour a day, so that was another lesson in itself.”

“Then there was the day I didn’t charge it, so its alarm went off at 5am which was literally a bit of a wake-up call.”

“But by and large it wasn’t too intrusive. it’s a very clever and effective piece of kit and I think it is a valuable tool to help us cut crime, prevent reoffending and apprehend those criminals who forget that we really can pinpoint where there are when they are tagged up.”
