Ninety-year-old Skegby paedophile suspect charged 60 years after alleged offences

Dennis Young is charged with nine counts of indecent assault against a boy under the age of 14 at Skegby Hall.

All of the alleged offences are dated between 1958 and 1961.

Young, who lives on Burton Stone Lane, York, appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday afternoon.

Dressed in a purple jacket and grey trousers, the frail pensioner shuffled slowly into the court room and spoke only to conform his name during the short preliminary 
hearing.

He was accompanied by two younger men who sat in the public gallery.

Young’s defence solicitor, Colin Byrne, said his client would not be entering any pleas at this stage.

Briefly outlining the case for the crown, Ruth Snodin said Young had been arrested in connection with Nottinghamshire Police’s high-profile operations into alleged sexual and physical abuse at a number of children’s homes across the county dating back to the 1950s.

She said the case was not suitable for a summary trial and needed to be moved up to crown court.

Young was told to attend a hearing at Nottingham Crown Court on August 26.

He is the latest person to be charged with multiple historic sex abuse offences as part of the police’s Operation Daybreak and Xeres.
