New trees planted at Idle Valley reserve in Retford

Forty new cricket bat willow trees have been planted at the Idle Valley Nature Reserve in Retford as a result of a partnership between Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, the Park Plaza Hotel in Nottingham and the OAKS restaurant, also in Nottingham.

Funds for the trees were raised through the Park Plaza chain’s Save Tomorrow’s Trees Today initiative.

The trees will eventually provide a source of income when timber from them is sold to make cricket bats.

Erin McDaid, the trust’s head of communications & marketing, said: “Our partnership with Park Plaza Hotels & Resorts and OAKS is a great example of local companies providing us with the flexibility we need to invest in our wildlife conservation work.

“This will help us generate sustainable future income whilst also creating a valuable habitat for wildlife.

“We are keen to develop long-term income to enable us to care for our nature reserves and support our campaigns.

“By re-planting an area of woodland with native species and planting a number of cricket bat willows we can not only provide great new habitat for wildlife

“We can also look forward to a sustainable income from the sale of timber in years to come.”
