New town square is ‘ground-breaking’

Work has begun on the building of Worksop’s Civic Square, which will provide a focal point for the community.

It will be used for events such as the Remembrance Day Parade as well as other events designed to encourage people in to the town centre.

To mark the start of the project, chairman of the Worksop Branch of the Royal British Legion, Brian Madden, and councillor David Pressley met on site for the initial ground breaking.

Mr Madden said: “For Remembrance Day, I would like to see the parade move off from the new square and I think that by starting here it will draw more of the public to the ceremony.”

“There will certainly be more room for people to come together and pay their respects.”

Coun Pressley, portfolio holder for community prosperity, said: “The new Civic Square will be a focal point for events and activities within the town centre and I am confident that this initiative will complement the cinema development, bringing people into our town.”

“This square will enhance the area around the town hall and is an exciting development for Worksop. We believe this will attract further visitors to the district. I am particularly grateful for the input from Brian and the legion.”
