New scheme for Carlton teenagers

TEENAGERS in Carlton are getting a bite of reality every week in a pioneering scheme designed to keep kids out of trouble and off the streets.

The youngsters participate in educational workshops teaching them right from wrong every Thursday evening at the youth club on Lawn Road.

The initiative, which has seen teens litter picking, among other activities, and learning about neighbourhood policing, is the brainchild of PCSO Scott Padley,

“We try to get them to think about what they are doing and have respect for the community and the law,” he said.

“We have different partners come in every week and work with them, encouraging them to communicate with each other.”

“It’s hard to keep their concentration up at times but I can see a continued improvement in their behaviour.”

“They are certainly taking more to lessons and realise when they drop litter around the village someone has to clean it up.”

The sessions are continuing for the next eight weeks with trips and team building exercises already planned in.

“We are certainly seeing an improvement in them. Parents are coming up to me asking if their kids can take part in the sessions,” added PCSO Padley.

“They’re good kids.”

“We’re working with them at an early age to stop them from picking up bad habits.”

“Even at the age they’re at they can see the problems they have been causing.”

The 12-week long programme is for 10-16-year-olds in Carlton and is held every Thursday at the Carlton Youth Club from 5-7pm or 6-8pm.
