New cafe at care home offers dementia support

A NEW cafe offering advice and support for people with dementia has opened at a Gainsborough care home.

The cafe at Foxby Court began last month and will run again on Monday 12th November and Monday 10th December, between 2-4pm.

An Order of St Johns Trust Admiral Nurse will be available to offer support and advice to carers within the trust and to members of the public, who are affected by memory problems or have been diagnosed with dementia, at the cafe. Residents at the care home and their relatives are also invited along.

The cafe has been brought about by home manager Maxine Kennedy, dementia lead Sandra Tudor and activity co-ordinator Bev Cowley, who pulled together staff to open it and give residents and their families somewhere to sit, chat and have a drink.

Staff are currently searching for a tea set to complete the cafe feel and welcome any donations.

Admiral Nurses are mental health nurses who specialise in dementia care and they are supported by the charity Dementia UK.

The Order of St Johns Trust now employs two Admiral Nurses to support the care staff.
