Mum-to-be thought she needed the loo - and has baby minutes later

But less than an hour later her partner Thomas found himself delivering their baby on the bathroom floor at their Northwood home in Prospect.

Nicola Chapman gave birth to her first born Heidi around 7.30am on Sunday 26th February - her exact predicted due date.

The 22-year-old said she couldn’t believe how quick and relatively-pain free the birth was.

“I’ve had period pains worse than that. I woke up and thought I needed a poo and then the baby just came out,” she said.

“I wasn’t expecting it to happen like that at all. Thomas was really good and I’m so proud of him for what he did.”

Partner of two years Thomas O’Sullivan, 24, said he had no idea what was going to happen when Nicola got up to go to the toilet.

“When blood started coming out I rang the midwife who told Nicola to take a warm bath and some paracetamol,” he said.

“After she’d done that she needed the loo again but that’s when I saw the head come out. I picked her up and told her to sit down and then the baby’s body just flew out.”

Thomas wrapped his baby daughter up and called for an ambulance who arrived just minutes later.

He said: “It all happened in a split second. We’ve been watching One Born Every Minute and the women on that looked nothing like Nicola,” he said.

“She’s like a size eight girl and I was really worried about her going into hospital for the birth, but she barely had any pain. It’s incredible.”

Thomas described Heidi, who weighed in at 6lbs 14oz, as the ‘perfect daughter’ and said they are settling into a new family life together.

“She’s already settled into a routine and is sleeping very well. We are very lucky.”
