Miracle marine’s cycling charity

Scott Stretton has completed several mammoth charity bike rides over the last year and now wants to encourage others to follow.

He along with his friend Garry Willoughby have set up Charity Cycling Events - a one stop guide to raising money for deserving organisations.

“Anyone who wishes to organise a charity cycle event but isn’t sure how to go about it can contact us,” said the fitness mad dad.

“We can set up training programmes, offer advice on the right bikes and routes and also set up a Just Giving web page for their charity.”

“We don’t make money but anywhere we do we will donate it to a chosen charity, which next year is Help For Heroes.”

The pair are the perfect men for the job. Gary is a qualified instructor so will be abe to get people in the right condition for a ride, while Scott is a cycle mechanic and will ensure bikes are in the correct condition.

Scott has completed several bikes rides, the longest been in September when he and Garry rode 984 miles, from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Scott said: “It was brilliant. Some of the roads were a bad. On one day I was going down a hill and I couldn’t slow down and I ended up in a field!”

The cycling challenges are the result of Scott’s determination to turn his life around following an accident 16 years ago.

Scott suffered a severely broken leg when competing in a battlefield training run in the Territorial Army. His health gradually declined but in 2010 he decided enough was enough and sought help from Harvey’s gym in Worksop.

There a personal trainer helped him to develop a fitness programme. Scott is now stronger, has lost five stone and rarely has to take pain killers.

He and Garry are now preparing for a four day bike ride next July from Worksop to Catterick and back again, in aid of Help For Heroes,

Already signed up is Tony Eaton, Help For Heroes county co-ordinator for Notts and Coun Ian Campbell, Bassetlaw Council chairman.

Scott added: “I’m going to be towing a trailer on my bike. I bought it for my daughter originally and she suggested towing the trailer.”

“People can join in if they wish - do it all or just a little bit.”
