Mayor drops in at Kiveton school

Mayor of Rotherham Coun Shaun Wright and his wife Mayoress Lisa Wright popped into Kiveton Park Infant School on Monday.

Pupils presented Coun Wright with a cheque for £180 for the Mayor’s Charity which was raised during a recent non-uniform day at the school.

Coun Wright also presented certificates to parents who had completed the Positive Parenting Programme.

The scheme has seen 16 parents, who have children in the foundation class, complete a five week course.

During their two hour class each week they focused on a variety of topics such as parenting, discipline and behaviour.

Foundation teacher Rachel Idell said the parents get a lot out of completing the course and sharing their experiences with other people in their situation.

She added: “It was a family learning initiative and was a positive parenting programme.”

I think a lot of it is about generating the confidence for parents to have a go.”

“It helps them not to get stuck in a rut at home and know they are able to help and improve the situation.”

Mrs Idell said 16 parents took part in the course, which was fully booked, and each week they would be set a task to carry out at home.

“The parents came for a five week course where we talk about discipline, behaviour and communication. Its different ways of parenting and how we can support the children,” she added.

“They were all foundation parents.”

“They come along every week and each session was focused on a different topic.”

“Each week they go away with a job to do and they would plan some rules for their houses.”

“At the end they get a certificate to say they have been on the course and this time the mayor presented the certificates.”

As well as Mrs Idell the course was also conducted with the help of Victoria Morris, parent support manager for Rotherham Council.

“We do the course each year,” said Mrs Idell.

“This year is our second year that we have done this course in particular.”

Coun Wright’s visit to Kiveton Park Infant School was one of four he made that day to local schools.

He also visited Aston Fence Primary, Swallownest Primary and Harthill Primary to receive cheques for The Mayor’s Charity.

All the money raised was done through the school’s holding non-uniform days.
