Maxine, originally from Clowne, is running the London Marathon to raise money for the hospice, which cares for her cousin’s nine year-old son James.

James, who lives in Harthill, visits Bluebell Wood for respite so his parents can have a well-deserved break.

“This may not seem like a big deal, but for parents caring for sick and disabled children, who need constant care, it is a real lifesaver,” said Maxine.

“My cousin and her husband spend their lives caring for James and his sister Shannon, who both have disabilities, which mean they will never be able to lead independent lives.”

“At Bluebell Wood James is always met with a smile and my cousin knows he is well looked after while she and her husband enjoy an evening together.”

Maxine moved to Bermuda in 2008 and will come back to England for the marathon on 21st April. She has been training in Bermuda’s humid climate and has done two half marathons in preparation.

Heidi Megaughin, Bluebell Wood acting chief executive said: “This is a very dedicated lady to be making the trip over from Bermuda to run on our behalf and we’re really grateful to her for taking on this feat.”

“The London Marathon is a huge challenge so we hope everyone will get behind her and help us to support more local children like James.”
